Afterworld
by Mike Johnson
Imaginative, innovative, thought provoking
Afterworld is a novella length work of magical realism with a whodunit element. The plot follows a ghost who ends up in a hut on a New Zealand mountain. As the ghost seeks to understand their life and death, fragments of their past are remembered. Contending identities, times, and events emerge.

Hi Mike,
I just wanted to tell you, right now, having just finished reading Afterworld, sitting on an old French cane chair I have had for thirty years, in my bedroom, with the sun glowing in, and it setting into the trees as I read the last words, that I was so moved, SO MOVED, by the book. And I don’t mean emotionally, I mean spiritually.
I bought it because those few words, in fact the first para or two, that you read at the book event, grabbed me in the chest. I hoped I might find more words or phrases like that in the book. I found plenty. Many words transported me, consoled me, shocked me into a reality I am yet to face, enchanted me, intrigued me, pushed me, pulled me, and satisfied me in a way that only perfect words can, because they do all of those things that I have just mentioned. There was no better word, no better sentence, no better thought. Fuck! It’s extraordinary.
